THE TAXI DRIVER ACCREDITATION PROCESS

FREE INFORMATION SESSION
The free Information session will take you through all the steps and costs in obtaining your taxi driver accreditation. Sessions are held on a regular basis at the three CBS’s i.e. Adelaide Independent Taxis, Suburban Taxis Yellow Cabs and the two Training Providers Taxi-Cab Training Centre and Transport Training Centre.

TRAINEE DRIVER PASSPORT
At the completion of the free information session, new driver candidates are referred to the preferred training provider to book into the English assessment and road law theory test.  These assessments are held at the Taxi Council.  At this time your photo ID will be taken and the training passport commenced.  The training passport will be a record of your training process and lasts for a period of 12 months.

ENGLISH ASSESSMENT INTERVIEW
As communication is a critical part of being a professional taxi driver each trainee is required to pass the upgraded English Assessment interview. This assessment is conducted by an approved qualified assessor.

ROAD LAW THEORY TEST
Every new driver candidate will undertake a Road Law Theory Test which requires the new driver candidate to successfully answer 10 Road Law Questions.

PRACTICAL DRIVING ASSESSMENT
This assessment which is conducted by a registered training organisation (RTO) approved by the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI). New driver candidates will be tested in a late model automatic car and will be assessed by a qualified assessor on their ability to provide a safe comfortable drive, their driving skills, road craft and traffic management skills.

THE TRAINING COURSE
The training course covers the following modules and is of four days duration all training modules are assessed

  • The role of the DTEI
  • The PassengerTransport Act and Regulations
  • Passengers with special needs (including acceptance of guide dogs)
  • Driver safety, security and conflict management
  • Customer service/relations
  • Tourism
  • Navigation and use of the street directory including practical on-road mobile classroom
  • Driver health, stress and fatigue management
  • Occupational Health, Safety, Welfare, Discrimination and Equal Opportunity

INDUCTION SESSION (CENTRALISED BOOKING SERVICE)
The CBS conducts driver induction sessions. Students are shown how to operate the taxi including the computer dispatch system, meter, EFTPOS machine, the camera and G.P.S. alarm. This session also includes the CBS policies and procedures.

OPERATOR ORIENTATION SESSION
The Taxi Operator will be your on road training supervisor and mentor and will introduce you to all the hands on functions of driving a cab, eg operating the meter, driver change over procedure, refuelling, paperwork and general maintenance of the taxi.

TRAINEE ACCREDITATION
Once trainees have successfully completed all of the above steps, they can now obtain trainee accreditation from Accreditation and Licensing at Netley.

DRIVER PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (PIN)
Once the new driver has obtained trainee accreditation they must apply for a PIN before commencing taxi driving. The number is available from the nominated CBS.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MODULES
The professional development program is designed to provide ongoing training and driver development during the minimum six month trainee period. There are two sessions which will be conducted, firstly by the CBS and secondly by the Taxi Council. Experienced drivers will be a mentor to answer questions, develop new driver skills and teach trainees how to maximise their income.

FINAL ASSESSMENT
The final assessment is conducted once the trainee has completed all the above training steps and the drivers passport has been signed off. The final assessment can not be taken until a minimum of 6 months on road training has been completed. This assessment is based on knowledge and application of the regulations, customer service, tourism, navigation skills, places of interest, localities, suburbs directions from the CBD and the professional development modules1 and 2.

When successfully completed, the trainee driver can apply for full taxi driver accreditation at Accreditation and Licensing, 71 Transport Avenue, Netley.

The driver can now apply for full taxi driver accreditation at Accreditation and Licensing 71 Transport Ave Netley
